Side Dish
American

Green bean casserole is a classic American dish, popularized by the Campbell Soup Company in the 1950s. It typically consists of green beans, cream of mushroom soup, and crispy fried onions. This comforting casserole has become a staple at Thanksgiving and other holiday gatherings. The dish was created by Dorcas Reilly, a home economist working in the Campbell's test kitchen. Today, it is a beloved side dish in many American households. Some chefs and restaurants have put their own spin on the classic recipe, adding ingredients like bacon or cheese to elevate the flavors. The best version of this dish can be found in traditional American diners and family-owned restaurants. The key to a great green bean casserole lies in the crispy fried onions and the creamy mushroom sauce. While the classic recipe is widely popular, some alternative methods include using fresh mushrooms instead of canned soup or adding a crunchy topping of breadcrumbs and Parmesan cheese.
