Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 1 lb of lamb or chicken, thinly sliced
- 1/4 cup of olive oil
- 2 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1 tsp of dried oregano
- 1/2 tsp of dried thyme
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 4 pita bread rounds
- 1 cup of diced tomatoes
- 1 cup of sliced red onions
- 1 cup of shredded lettuce
- 1 cup of tzatziki sauce
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the sliced lamb or chicken, 1/4 cup of olive oil, minced garlic, dried oregano, dried thyme, salt, and pepper. Toss to coat the meat evenly. Let it marinate for at least 20 minutes.
- Heat a grill or grill pan over medium-high heat. Grill the marinated meat for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until fully cooked and slightly charred. Remove from heat and let it rest for a few minutes.
- Warm the pita bread rounds on the grill for about 30 seconds on each side.
- To assemble the gyro, place a generous amount of the grilled meat on each pita bread round. Top with diced tomatoes, sliced red onions, shredded lettuce, and a dollop of tzatziki sauce.
- Fold the pita bread over the filling to form a wrap. Serve immediately and enjoy!
The Greek gyro is a beloved street food that has its roots in the culinary traditions of Greece. This iconic dish consists of seasoned meat, usually lamb, pork, or chicken, cooked on a vertical rotisserie. The meat is then thinly sliced and served in a pita or flatbread, accompanied by fresh vegetables, tzatziki sauce, and sometimes fries. The gyro's origins can be traced back to the 1920s, when Greek immigrants in America adapted the Turkish doner kebab to create this flavorful and satisfying meal. Today, the best gyros can be found in Athens, where skilled chefs meticulously prepare the meat and assemble the perfect combination of flavors. The key to a delicious gyro lies in the tender, well-seasoned meat and the creamy, tangy tzatziki sauce. Whether enjoyed as a quick bite on the go or as a sit-down meal, the Greek gyro continues to be a favorite among food enthusiasts worldwide.
