Creamy German Potato Soup
Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 6 slices of bacon, chopped
- 1 onion, chopped
- 3 cloves of garlic, minced
- 6 cups of chicken broth
- 2 pounds of potatoes, peeled and diced
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon of dried thyme
- 1 cup of heavy cream
- 2 tablespoons of chopped fresh chives
Instructions
- In a large pot, cook the chopped bacon over medium heat until crispy. Remove the bacon from the pot and set aside, leaving the bacon fat in the pot.
- Add the chopped onion to the pot and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute.
- Pour in the chicken broth and add the diced potatoes, salt, pepper, and dried thyme. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for 20-25 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender.
- Using an immersion blender, blend the soup until smooth. Alternatively, transfer half of the soup to a blender and blend until smooth, then return it to the pot.
- Stir in the heavy cream and let the soup simmer for an additional 5 minutes. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary.
- Serve the soup hot, garnished with the crispy bacon and chopped fresh chives.
German Potato Soup, also known as Kartoffelsuppe, has been a staple in German cuisine for centuries. This hearty and comforting soup has its roots in the rural regions of Germany, where potatoes were a common and affordable ingredient. Traditionally, the soup is made with potatoes, onions, leeks, and carrots, simmered in a flavorful broth until the vegetables are tender. The addition of a touch of cream adds a rich and velvety texture to the soup, elevating its taste to a whole new level. Chefs in Germany take pride in perfecting this classic recipe, with variations found in different regions, each adding its own unique twist. Today, the best versions of German Potato Soup with a touch of cream can be found in cozy, family-owned restaurants in Bavaria and Saxony, where the soup is often served with freshly baked bread and a dollop of sour cream on top. To make the perfect German Potato Soup at home, it's essential to use high-quality potatoes and a good-quality cream to achieve that creamy, indulgent consistency. While the traditional recipe calls for bacon or ham for added flavor, a popular alternative method is to incorporate smoked sausage or crispy fried onions for a delicious twist. Whether enjoyed as a comforting meal on a cold winter day or as a starter at a festive gathering, German Potato Soup with a touch of cream continues to be a beloved dish that embodies the heart and soul of German culinary tradition.
