- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes
- 1/2 cup chicken broth
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Chopped fresh parsley for garnish
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine 1 pound of ground beef, 1/2 cup breadcrumbs, 1/4 cup milk, 1 small finely chopped onion, 1 egg, 1 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, and 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg. Mix until well combined.
- Shape the mixture into meatballs, about 1 inch in diameter.
- In a large skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat. Add the meatballs and cook until browned on all sides, about 8-10 minutes. Remove the meatballs from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add 2 cloves of minced garlic and cook for 1 minute. Stir in 1 can of crushed tomatoes, 1/2 cup of chicken broth, 1 teaspoon of paprika, 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper, and 1 tablespoon of brown sugar. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Return the meatballs to the skillet, spooning the sauce over them. Simmer for 15-20 minutes, until the meatballs are cooked through and the sauce has thickened.
- Garnish with chopped fresh parsley and serve the meatballs with the spicy tomato sauce. Enjoy!
German meatballs, also known as "Königsberger Klopse," have a rich history dating back to the 18th century in the region of Königsberg, Prussia. These delectable meatballs are traditionally made with a mix of ground pork and beef, combined with onions, eggs, and bread crumbs, then simmered in a flavorful broth. However, a modern twist on this classic dish involves serving the meatballs with a zesty and spicy tomato sauce, adding a delightful kick to the traditional recipe. In Germany, renowned chefs and restaurants, such as the historic Zur Letzten Instanz in Berlin, have perfected the art of preparing Königsberger Klopse with a spicy tomato sauce, delighting diners with the harmonious blend of flavors. The key to achieving the best version of this dish lies in the quality of the meat and the balance of spices in the tomato sauce. The succulent meatballs, paired with the tangy and fiery notes of the tomato sauce, create a truly unforgettable culinary experience. For those seeking to recreate this dish at home, it's essential to pay attention to the seasoning of the meatballs, ensuring they are well-seasoned and tender. When preparing the spicy tomato sauce, the use of fresh, ripe tomatoes and a perfect balance of chili, paprika, and other spices is crucial to achieving the ideal flavor profile. Additionally, some alternative methods for making this dish include incorporating a hint of smokiness by grilling the meatballs before smothering them in the spicy tomato sauce, adding an extra layer of complexity to the dish. Today, the best versions of German meatballs with a spicy tomato sauce can be savored in authentic German restaurants that stay true to the traditional recipe while infusing their own innovative twists. Whether enjoyed in the charming ambiance of a historic eatery or prepared with love in a home kitchen, these tantalizing meatballs with a fiery tomato sauce are sure to captivate the palate and leave a lasting impression.
