Created by: Howcan Team

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds of Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
  • 4 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup of unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup of heavy cream
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Chopped fresh chives for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  • Place the peeled and cut potatoes in a large pot and cover with cold water. Add a generous pinch of salt to the water.
  • Bring the pot to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are fork-tender.
  • While the potatoes are cooking, melt the butter in a small saucepan over low heat. Add the minced garlic and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly, until fragrant. Remove from heat and set aside.
  • Once the potatoes are cooked, drain them well and return them to the pot. Use a potato masher or a fork to mash the potatoes to your desired consistency.
  • Pour the melted garlic butter over the mashed potatoes and stir to combine. Gradually add the heavy cream, stirring until the potatoes are creamy and smooth. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Transfer the mashed potatoes to a serving dish, garnish with chopped fresh chives if desired, and serve hot.

American

Garlic mashed potatoes have a rich history dating back to the 1700s when potatoes were first introduced to Europe. This classic side dish gained popularity in the United States during the 20th century, becoming a staple in American cuisine. Renowned chefs like Julia Child and Emeril Lagasse have contributed to its popularity by incorporating their own unique twists, elevating the dish to new heights. Today, the best versions of garlic mashed potatoes can be found in upscale steakhouses and fine dining restaurants across the country. The key to perfecting this dish lies in using high-quality potatoes, fresh garlic, and a generous amount of butter and cream. For a unique twist, some chefs infuse the mashed potatoes with roasted garlic for a deeper, caramelized flavor. Whether served alongside a juicy steak or as a comforting side at a family dinner, garlic mashed potatoes continue to be a beloved classic.
