Fried Plantains with Caramel Sauce
Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 2 ripe plantains, peeled and sliced into 1/2 inch rounds
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup water
- 1/4 cup heavy cream
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
Instructions
- In a large skillet, heat 1/4 cup of vegetable oil over medium-high heat.
- Add the sliced plantains to the skillet and fry for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and caramelized. Remove from the skillet and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
- In a small saucepan, combine 1/2 cup of granulated sugar and 1/4 cup of water. Cook over medium heat, swirling the pan occasionally, until the sugar dissolves and turns a deep amber color, about 5-7 minutes.
- Carefully pour in 1/4 cup of heavy cream while whisking constantly. The mixture will bubble up, so be cautious. Continue to whisk until smooth.
- Remove the caramel sauce from the heat and stir in 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla extract and a pinch of salt.
- To serve, arrange the fried plantains on a plate and drizzle with the homemade caramel sauce. Enjoy immediately!
Fried plantains with caramel sauce is a popular dish in many Latin American and Caribbean countries. The history of this dish can be traced back to the indigenous people of these regions who first cultivated and cooked plantains. The dish has evolved over time, with different regions adding their own unique twists to the recipe. In recent years, it has gained popularity in the United States and can be found in many Latin American and Caribbean restaurants. Chefs like Chef Jose Andres and Chef Marcus Samuelsson have put their own spin on this classic dish, incorporating it into their menus. The key to a perfect fried plantains with caramel sauce is getting the plantains perfectly ripe and frying them to a crispy golden brown. The caramel sauce should be rich and velvety, adding a sweet and decadent touch to the dish. For a unique twist, some chefs also add a sprinkle of sea salt or a dash of rum to the caramel sauce for an extra depth of flavor. Today, the best versions of this dish can be found in authentic Latin American and Caribbean restaurants, where the chefs have mastered the art of frying plantains and creating the perfect caramel sauce.
