Fresh ham, also known as green ham, is a succulent cut of pork from the hind leg of the pig. This dish has a rich history dating back to ancient times, where it was a staple in many cultures. In the United States, fresh ham is often associated with Southern cuisine and is a popular choice for holiday feasts. Chefs like Emeril Lagasse and Paula Deen have popularized fresh ham in their recipes, often using a mix of herbs and spices to enhance the flavor. The best versions of this dish can be found in Southern BBQ joints and traditional American diners. The key to a perfect fresh ham lies in the seasoning and slow roasting to ensure a juicy and flavorful result. For a twist, some chefs opt for smoking the ham to infuse it with a smoky flavor. Whether roasted or smoked, fresh ham remains a beloved dish with a rich history and a place on many dinner tables.
