Ingredients

  • 3 pounds beef chuck roast
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 French rolls
  • 8 slices provolone cheese

Instructions

  • Season the beef chuck roast with garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper.
  • Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the roast on all sides until browned, about 4-5 minutes per side.
  • Place the sliced onions and minced garlic in the bottom of a slow cooker. Place the seared roast on top of the onions and garlic.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine beef broth, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, dried rosemary, and dried thyme. Pour the mixture over the roast in the slow cooker.
  • Cover and cook on low for 8 hours or on high for 4 hours, until the beef is tender and shreds easily with a fork.
  • Remove the roast from the slow cooker and shred the meat using two forks. Strain the liquid from the slow cooker to use as au jus for dipping.
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Split the French rolls and place them on a baking sheet. Toast in the preheated oven for 5 minutes.
  • Divide the shredded beef among the rolls and top each with 2 slices of provolone cheese. Return to the oven and bake for an additional 5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  • Serve the French Dip Sandwiches with the reserved au jus for dipping.

The French Dip Sandwich, also known as a "Dip" or "Beef Dip," is a classic American dish with disputed origins. Two Los Angeles restaurants, Philippe's and Cole's, both claim to have invented the sandwich in the early 20th century. The story goes that Philippe's accidentally dropped a French roll into a pan of meat drippings, and the customer loved the result. The sandwich typically consists of thinly sliced roast beef on a French roll, served with a side of au jus for dipping. The key to a great French Dip is the quality of the beef and the richness of the au jus. Today, Philippe's in downtown Los Angeles is renowned for serving one of the best French Dip Sandwiches in the country. The meat is slow-roasted and thinly sliced, and the au jus is flavorful and savory. The sandwich has become a staple in diners and delis across the United States, with variations including different types of cheese or added toppings. Whether you're in Los Angeles or elsewhere, a well-crafted French Dip Sandwich is a must-try for any food enthusiast.
