Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup almond flour
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 4 egg whites
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Sliced almonds, for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a financier mold or mini muffin tin.
- Melt the 1/2 cup of unsalted butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Cook until the butter turns a light brown color and has a nutty aroma. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
- In a large bowl, whisk together 1 cup of almond flour, 1 cup of powdered sugar, 1/2 cup of all-purpose flour, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt.
- In a separate bowl, whisk the 4 egg whites until frothy. Gently fold the egg whites into the dry ingredients until just combined.
- Add the slightly cooled browned butter and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract to the batter, and mix until smooth.
- Fill the prepared molds with the batter, about 3/4 full. Sprinkle sliced almonds on top of each cake for garnish.
- Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and the centers are set.
- Allow the financiers to cool in the mold for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Serve and enjoy these classic French almond cakes!
Financiers are small, delicate French almond cakes with a rich history dating back to the 19th century. Legend has it that these delectable treats were created by a pastry chef in the financial district of Paris, hence the name "financiers." The traditional recipe includes ground almonds, egg whites, powdered sugar, and brown butter, resulting in a moist and flavorful cake with a slightly crispy exterior. Financiers are often baked in small rectangular molds, resembling bars of gold, further emphasizing their association with wealth and prosperity. Today, these delectable treats can be found in patisseries throughout France, particularly in Paris and the Alsace region. For the best financiers, seek out a renowned pastry chef or visit a traditional French bakery where they are expertly crafted.
