The dirty water dog, also known as the New York hot dog, has been a staple of street food culture in New York City for over a century. Originating in the late 19th century, it gained popularity due to its affordability and convenience. The hot dog is typically boiled in water seasoned with various spices, giving it the "dirty water" moniker. Vendors such as Sabrett and Nathan's Famous have become synonymous with this iconic dish. Today, the best versions of the dirty water dog can still be found on the streets of New York City, particularly in areas like Times Square and Central Park. The key to a great dirty water dog lies in the quality of the sausage and the flavorful water it's boiled in.
