Created by: Howcan Team

Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup hot water
  • 1 teaspoon instant coffee granules

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 8-inch round cake pans.
  • In a large mixing bowl, cream together 1 cup of butter and 2 cups of sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  • Gradually add the flour to the creamed mixture, alternating with the milk. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overmix.
  • In a small bowl, dissolve the instant coffee granules in the hot water. Add the cocoa powder to the coffee mixture and stir until smooth.
  • Take 1 cup of the cake batter and mix it with the cocoa mixture to create a chocolate batter.
  • Pour the remaining plain batter evenly into the prepared cake pans. Then, drop spoonfuls of the chocolate batter on top of the plain batter in each pan.
  • Using a toothpick or knife, gently swirl the batters together to create a marbled effect resembling cow print.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
  • Once the cakes are completely cooled, assemble and frost the layers as desired, creating a cow print design on the outside of the cake.
  • Slice and serve the cow print cake, and enjoy the visually stunning and delicious dessert!

The cow print cake, also known as the "cow cake," has a whimsical history rooted in the American Midwest. This eye-catching dessert gained popularity in the 1950s, with its origins often attributed to dairy farm communities. The cake's distinctive black and white pattern mimics the hide of a cow, making it a playful addition to birthdays and special occasions. Renowned chefs like Martha Stewart have popularized this cake, and it has become a staple in bakeries across the country. To create the perfect cow print cake, achieving a moist and flavorful base is crucial, while skillfully incorporating the contrasting colors for the signature pattern is essential. For a fun twist, some bakers use fondant or edible food coloring to achieve the cow print design. Today, the best versions of this delightful dessert can be found in artisanal bakeries and specialty cake shops, where talented pastry chefs continue to innovate and perfect this beloved treat.
