Created by: Howcan Team

Ingredients

  • 4 pieces of cube steak (about 6 oz each)
  • 1 cup of all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of paprika
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/4 cup of milk
  • 1/2 cup of vegetable oil
  • 4 large potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1/2 cup of butter
  • 1/4 cup of milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cups of beef broth
  • 1/4 cup of all-purpose flour

Instructions

  • In a shallow dish, mix 1 cup of flour, 1 teaspoon of salt, 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper, 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder, and 1/2 teaspoon of paprika.
  • In another shallow dish, beat 2 eggs with 1/4 cup of milk.
  • Dip each piece of cube steak into the flour mixture, then the egg mixture, and again into the flour mixture to coat evenly.
  • Heat 1/2 cup of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Fry the steaks for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and cooked through. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  • Meanwhile, place the cubed potatoes in a pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil and cook for 15-20 minutes, or until tender. Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot.
  • Add 1/2 cup of butter and 1/4 cup of milk to the potatoes. Mash until smooth and season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • In the same skillet used for the steaks, pour off all but 1/4 cup of the oil and drippings. Whisk in 1/4 cup of flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to make a roux.
  • Gradually whisk in 2 cups of beef broth, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet. Cook and stir until the gravy thickens, about 5 minutes.
  • Serve the country fried steaks with the mashed potatoes and gravy, and enjoy!

Country Fried Steak with Mashed Potatoes and Gravy is a classic Southern comfort food dish that has been enjoyed for generations. The dish originated in the rural South, where hearty and filling meals were a necessity for hardworking farmers and laborers. The steak is typically tenderized, breaded, and fried to a golden crisp, then smothered in rich, creamy gravy. The creamy mashed potatoes serve as the perfect accompaniment, soaking up the savory gravy and adding a comforting element to the dish. One of the most famous renditions of this dish can be found in the heart of Texas, where renowned chefs have perfected the art of country fried steak. The key to a delicious country fried steak lies in the breading - a perfect balance of crispy and flavorful. The gravy should be rich and velvety, with just the right amount of seasoning to complement the steak. As for the mashed potatoes, they should be creamy and buttery, providing a smooth contrast to the crispy steak. While the traditional method of preparing country fried steak involves pan-frying, some chefs have put their own spin on the dish by incorporating alternative cooking techniques such as deep-frying or air-frying. These variations offer a unique twist on the classic dish, appealing to a wider range of palates. Today, country fried steak with mashed potatoes and gravy remains a beloved staple in Southern cuisine, and can be found in diners, family-owned restaurants, and upscale eateries across the country. Whether enjoyed in a rustic roadside diner or a trendy urban bistro, this timeless dish continues to evoke feelings of warmth and nostalgia with every comforting bite.
