Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 4 (4-ounce) cube steaks
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 2 eggs
- 1/4 cup whole milk
- 1 cup vegetable oil
- 4 large russet potatoes, peeled and cubed
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1/2 cup whole milk
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 cups beef broth
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
Instructions
- In a shallow dish, combine 1 cup of flour, 1 teaspoon of salt, 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper, 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon of paprika, and 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper.
- In another shallow dish, whisk together 2 eggs and 1/4 cup of milk.
- Dredge each cube steak in the seasoned flour, then dip into the egg mixture, and coat again with the seasoned flour.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Fry the cube steaks for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and cooked through. Remove to a paper towel-lined plate to drain.
- Meanwhile, place the cubed potatoes in a large pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil and cook for 15-20 minutes, or until tender. Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot.
- Add the butter and 1/2 cup of milk to the pot with the potatoes. Mash until smooth and creamy. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- In a small saucepan, bring the beef broth to a simmer. In a separate bowl, whisk together 2 tablespoons of flour with 1/4 cup of water to create a slurry. Slowly whisk the slurry into the simmering broth, stirring constantly until thickened into a gravy.
- Serve the chicken fried steak with the mashed potatoes and gravy. Enjoy!
Chicken Fried Steak with Mashed Potatoes and Gravy is a classic Southern comfort food dish that has been enjoyed for generations. The dish is believed to have originated in the Texas Hill Country, where German immigrants brought their love of breaded and fried meats. The dish quickly became popular throughout the South, with each region adding its own unique twist to the recipe. Today, it is a staple in diners and home kitchens across the United States. The key to a delicious Chicken Fried Steak is the crispy, golden-brown breading that encases a tenderized steak. The steak is typically dredged in seasoned flour, dipped in egg, and then coated in a mixture of flour, salt, and pepper before being fried to perfection. The result is a crunchy exterior that gives way to a juicy, flavorful steak. The creamy mashed potatoes and rich gravy are the perfect accompaniments to the crispy steak. The mashed potatoes should be smooth and buttery, while the gravy should be thick and savory, made from the drippings of the fried steak and seasoned to perfection. While many restaurants across the South claim to have the best Chicken Fried Steak, some of the most renowned versions can be found in Texas, Oklahoma, and Tennessee. Each region has its own take on the dish, with some chefs adding a spicy kick to the breading or infusing the gravy with unique flavors. For those looking to recreate this beloved dish at home, it's essential to pay attention to the details. Tenderizing the steak properly and achieving the perfect breading consistency are crucial steps. Additionally, taking the time to make a flavorful gravy from the pan drippings will elevate the dish to new heights. Overall, Chicken Fried Steak with Mashed Potatoes and Gravy is a timeless comfort food that continues to bring joy to diners and home cooks alike. Its rich history and regional variations make it a beloved part of Southern cuisine.
