  • 4 cube steaks
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 cup vegetable oil for frying
  • 4 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • In a shallow dish, mix together 1 cup of flour, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, 1 teaspoon of onion powder, 1 teaspoon of paprika, 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper, and salt and pepper to taste.
  • In another shallow dish, whisk together 2 eggs and 1/4 cup of milk.
  • Dredge each cube steak in the seasoned flour, then dip into the egg mixture, and dredge again in the seasoned flour, pressing the coating onto the steaks. Set aside.
  • Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Fry the steaks for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and cooked through. Remove to a paper towel-lined plate to drain.
  • Meanwhile, place the sweet potatoes in a large pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil and cook for 15-20 minutes, or until the sweet potatoes are fork-tender. Drain well.
  • Mash the sweet potatoes with butter and 1/4 cup of milk until smooth and creamy. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Serve the chicken fried steak with the sweet potato mash and enjoy!

The history of Chicken Fried Steak dates back to German and Austrian immigrants who brought the concept of Wiener Schnitzel to Texas in the 19th century. The dish quickly became a Southern staple, with variations emerging across the region. Today, chefs like Paula Deen and Bobby Flay have put their own spin on this classic, often pairing it with creamy sweet potato mash for a delightful twist. The best version of this dish can be found in Southern diners and family-owned restaurants, where the steak is tenderized, breaded, and fried to golden perfection, then served alongside velvety sweet potato mash for a comforting and indulgent meal.
