Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 4 (6-ounce) cube steaks
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 eggs
- 1/4 cup whole milk
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 8 ounces cremini mushrooms, sliced
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a shallow dish, combine 1 cup of flour, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, cayenne pepper, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper.
- In another shallow dish, whisk together the eggs and milk.
- Dredge each cube steak in the seasoned flour, then dip into the egg mixture, and coat again with the seasoned flour.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Fry the cube steaks for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown. Remove from the skillet and drain on paper towels.
- In the same skillet, add the sliced mushrooms and cook until they release their liquid and become golden brown, about 5 minutes. Remove the mushrooms from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in 1/4 cup of flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to make a roux.
- Gradually whisk in the beef broth and bring to a simmer, stirring constantly until the gravy thickens, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in the heavy cream, Worcestershire sauce, and the cooked mushrooms. Simmer for an additional 2-3 minutes, then season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Serve the chicken fried steaks with the mushroom gravy poured over the top. Enjoy!
Chicken Fried Steak with mushroom gravy has a rich history rooted in Southern cuisine. This beloved dish originated in the Texas Hill Country, where German and Czech immigrants brought their love of schnitzel. The tenderized beef cutlet is coated in seasoned flour, fried to golden perfection, and smothered in a creamy mushroom gravy. Renowned chefs like Paula Deen and Bobby Flay have put their own spin on this classic, adding depth of flavor with sautéed mushrooms and aromatic herbs. Today, the best versions of this dish can be found in family-owned diners and Southern-style restaurants across the United States. The key to a perfect Chicken Fried Steak with mushroom gravy lies in achieving a crispy, golden crust and a lusciously creamy gravy infused with the earthy richness of mushrooms.
