Cabbage Rolls (Golabki)

Created by: Howcan Team

Ingredients

  • 1 large head of cabbage
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 cup uncooked white rice
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
  • 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Carefully remove the core from the cabbage and place the whole head in the boiling water. Cook for about 2 minutes, then carefully remove the outer leaves. Continue this process until you have about 12 large leaves. Set aside to cool.
  • In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, uncooked rice, chopped onion, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Mix well.
  • Place a small amount of the meat mixture onto each cabbage leaf, then roll up, tucking in the sides to create a neat package.
  • In a separate bowl, mix together the tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, brown sugar, and lemon juice.
  • Spread a thin layer of the tomato mixture in the bottom of a large baking dish. Place the cabbage rolls seam side down in the dish, then pour the remaining tomato mixture over the top.
  • Cover the dish with foil and bake for 1 hour. Uncover and bake for an additional 30 minutes, or until the cabbage is tender and the meat is fully cooked.
  • Allow to cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy!

Cabbage rolls, also known as Golabki, have a rich history dating back to Eastern Europe, particularly Poland. This traditional dish consists of tender cabbage leaves wrapped around a savory filling, often a mixture of ground meat, rice, and spices, then simmered in a flavorful tomato sauce. The origins of Golabki can be traced back to the 18th century, where it was a popular dish among Polish nobility. Today, this beloved comfort food can be found in many Polish households and restaurants, with each chef adding their own unique twist to the classic recipe.
