The burger smasher, also known as a smash burger, has a rich history dating back to the 1930s. Originating in the United States, this iconic dish gained popularity in diners and roadside burger joints. The technique involves smashing a ball of ground beef onto a hot griddle, creating a thin patty with crispy, caramelized edges. This method locks in the juices and creates a deliciously flavorful burger. Today, the best versions of this dish can be found in classic American diners and trendy burger bars across the country. The key to a perfect smash burger lies in using high-quality ground beef and achieving the ideal smash-to-thickness ratio. Some chefs also swear by using a cast iron skillet for the perfect sear. Whether enjoyed with classic toppings or gourmet ingredients, the burger smasher continues to be a beloved staple in American cuisine.
