Created by: Howcan Team

Ingredients

  • 4 bratwurst sausages
  • 1 small head of red cabbage, shredded
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon caraway seeds
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  • In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and cook until golden and crispy, about 10-15 minutes. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  • In the same skillet, add the remaining 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil and sauté the shredded red cabbage for 5 minutes until slightly wilted.
  • Stir in the apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, caraway seeds, salt, and pepper. Cover and cook for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender. Keep warm.
  • While the cabbage is cooking, heat a separate skillet over medium-high heat. Add the bratwurst sausages and cook for 10-12 minutes, turning occasionally, until browned and cooked through.
  • In a shallow dish, place the flour and dredge the cooked bratwurst sausages in the flour, shaking off any excess.
  • In a separate skillet, heat enough vegetable oil to cover the bottom of the pan over medium-high heat. Carefully place the floured bratwurst sausages in the hot oil and fry for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden and crispy.
  • Serve the crispy fried bratwurst on a bed of the tangy red cabbage, and top with the crispy fried onions. Enjoy!

German

Bratwurst with red cabbage and crispy fried onions is a classic German dish that has stood the test of time. The history of this hearty meal dates back to the Middle Ages, where it was a staple among German peasants. The bratwurst, a type of German sausage, is traditionally made with a blend of pork and veal, seasoned with a mix of aromatic spices. The red cabbage is braised with apples, vinegar, and sugar to create a sweet and tangy flavor profile. The crispy fried onions add a delightful crunch and depth of flavor to the dish. In modern times, this dish can be found in traditional German beer gardens and family-owned restaurants throughout Germany. Chefs take pride in using high-quality, locally sourced ingredients to create the perfect balance of flavors and textures. The best version of this dish can be found in the regions of Bavaria and Thuringia, where bratwurst is a celebrated culinary tradition. To make this dish at home, it's essential to get the bratwurst from a reputable butcher or specialty store to ensure the authentic flavor and quality. The red cabbage should be cooked low and slow to achieve a tender and flavorful result. As for the crispy fried onions, achieving the perfect golden brown and crispy texture is key, adding a delightful contrast to the dish. For a unique twist, some chefs also grill the bratwurst to impart a smoky flavor, or braise the red cabbage with red wine for an added depth of richness. Whether enjoyed at a bustling beer garden in Germany or homemade with care, bratwurst with red cabbage and crispy fried onions is a comforting and satisfying dish that continues to bring people together through its rich history and delicious flavors.
