Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 4 bratwurst sausages
- 4 pretzel buns
- 1 onion, thinly sliced
- 1/4 cup of beer
- 2 tablespoons of olive oil
- 1 tablespoon of whole grain mustard
- 1 tablespoon of butter
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat a grill or grill pan to medium-high heat.
- In a skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook until caramelized, about 10 minutes. Set aside.
- Grill the bratwurst sausages for 10-12 minutes, turning occasionally, until they are cooked through and have grill marks. Remove from the grill and set aside.
- In the same skillet used for the onions, add the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil and the butter. Once the butter has melted, add the beer and whole grain mustard. Stir to combine and let it simmer for 2-3 minutes.
- Add the grilled bratwurst sausages to the skillet with the beer and mustard mixture. Coat the sausages with the sauce and let them simmer for an additional 2-3 minutes.
- Slice the pretzel buns in half and lightly toast them on the grill or in a toaster.
- To assemble the sandwiches, place a grilled bratwurst sausage on each pretzel bun. Top with the caramelized onions and season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Serve the bratwurst pretzel sandwiches immediately and enjoy!
The Bratwurst Pretzel Sandwich has a rich history dating back to the 19th century in Germany. This iconic dish features a juicy bratwurst sausage nestled within a soft, warm pretzel bun, creating a perfect blend of savory and salty flavors. The dish gained popularity in the United States through German immigrants, particularly in regions like Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. Today, it's a staple at beer gardens, street fairs, and sports events. The key to a perfect Bratwurst Pretzel Sandwich lies in the quality of the bratwurst, the freshness of the pretzel bun, and the addition of tangy mustard or sauerkraut.
