Ingredients

  • 4 bratwurst sausages
  • 4 pretzel buns
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup of beer
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon of whole grain mustard
  • 1 tablespoon of butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Preheat a grill or grill pan to medium-high heat.
  • In a skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook until caramelized, about 10 minutes. Set aside.
  • Grill the bratwurst sausages for 10-12 minutes, turning occasionally, until they are cooked through and have grill marks. Remove from the grill and set aside.
  • In the same skillet used for the onions, add the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil and the butter. Once the butter has melted, add the beer and whole grain mustard. Stir to combine and let it simmer for 2-3 minutes.
  • Add the grilled bratwurst sausages to the skillet with the beer and mustard mixture. Coat the sausages with the sauce and let them simmer for an additional 2-3 minutes.
  • Slice the pretzel buns in half and lightly toast them on the grill or in a toaster.
  • To assemble the sandwiches, place a grilled bratwurst sausage on each pretzel bun. Top with the caramelized onions and season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Serve the bratwurst pretzel sandwiches immediately and enjoy!

German

The Bratwurst Pretzel Sandwich has a rich history dating back to the 19th century in Germany. This iconic dish features a juicy bratwurst sausage nestled within a soft, warm pretzel bun, creating a perfect blend of savory and salty flavors. The dish gained popularity in the United States through German immigrants, particularly in regions like Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. Today, it's a staple at beer gardens, street fairs, and sports events. The key to a perfect Bratwurst Pretzel Sandwich lies in the quality of the bratwurst, the freshness of the pretzel bun, and the addition of tangy mustard or sauerkraut. For an authentic experience, visit traditional German beer gardens or specialty delis known for their artisanal sausages.
