The history of the black bean burger dates back to the 1980s when it emerged as a popular vegetarian alternative to traditional meat burgers. Chefs and restaurants across the United States, particularly in regions with a strong vegetarian and vegan culture like California and the Pacific Northwest, began experimenting with black beans as a base for burgers. The dish gained popularity for its rich, earthy flavor and its versatility in accommodating various spices and seasonings. Today, the best versions of this dish can be found in trendy urban eateries and health-conscious cafes. The key to a great black bean burger lies in the perfect blend of black beans, onions, garlic, and spices, all bound together with a suitable binder like breadcrumbs or flaxseed. Some famous alternative methods for making this dish include adding quinoa or sweet potatoes for added texture and flavor.
