Ingredients
- 2 1/4 cups of all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups of granulated sugar
- 1 cup of unsalted butter, softened
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup of whole milk
- 1 tablespoon of baking powder
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt
- 3 cups of powdered sugar
- 1 cup of unsalted butter, softened
- 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
- 2-3 tablespoons of heavy cream
- Food coloring (optional)
- Sprinkles or decorations (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large bowl, cream together 1 cup of butter and 1 1/2 cups of granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
- Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract.
- Combine 2 1/4 cups of flour, 1 tablespoon of baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt; gradually mix into the creamed mixture alternately with 1 cup of milk until just blended.
- Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans.
- Bake for 25 to 30 minutes in the preheated oven, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
- Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove from the pans and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
- To make the frosting, in a large bowl, cream 1 cup of butter with 3 cups of powdered sugar until smooth. Mix in 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract and 2-3 tablespoons of heavy cream until the frosting is smooth and spreadable. Add food coloring if desired.
- Once the cakes are completely cool, spread a layer of frosting on top of one cake layer, then place the second cake layer on top. Use the remaining frosting to cover the top and sides of the cake.
- Decorate with sprinkles or other decorations if desired. Enjoy your classic birthday cake!
The tradition of birthday cake dates back to ancient Greece, where round cakes were offered to the goddess Artemis to celebrate her birth. In the 18th century, German bakers began the custom of Kinderfest, or children's birthday celebrations, with sweetened bread dough and candles. The modern birthday cake, with its layers, frosting, and candles, became popular in the 19th century. Today, birthday cakes come in countless flavors and designs, from classic vanilla to extravagant multi-tiered creations. Notable pastry chefs like Duff Goldman and Buddy Valastro have elevated the art of birthday cake with their elaborate designs. For the best birthday cake experience, visit renowned bakeries like Magnolia Bakery in New York City or order a custom creation from a local pastry chef. The key to a perfect birthday cake lies in the moistness of the layers and the richness of the frosting, ensuring a memorable celebration for all.
