Beignets with Powdered Sugar
Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 1 cup lukewarm water
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup evaporated milk
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 4 cups powdered sugar, for dusting
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, dissolve 1/4 cup of granulated sugar and 1 packet of active dry yeast in 1 cup of lukewarm water. Let it sit for 10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together 2 large eggs and 1/2 cup of evaporated milk. Add this mixture to the yeast mixture and stir to combine.
- Gradually add 4 cups of all-purpose flour to the wet ingredients, mixing until a sticky dough forms.
- Add 1/4 cup of softened unsalted butter and 1/2 teaspoon of salt to the dough. Knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth and elastic, about 5 minutes.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough and roll it out on a floured surface to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut the dough into 2-inch squares.
- In a deep pot, heat vegetable oil to 360°F (180°C). Carefully drop the dough squares into the hot oil and fry until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
- Remove the beignets from the oil and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
- Dust the warm beignets generously with 4 cups of powdered sugar. Serve immediately and enjoy!
Beignets with powdered sugar are a beloved French pastry that has become a staple in New Orleans cuisine. These delightful deep-fried doughnuts are dusted with a generous amount of powdered sugar, creating a sweet and indulgent treat. The history of beignets can be traced back to France, where they were traditionally made as a festive treat for Mardi Gras. However, it was in New Orleans where they truly gained fame, thanks to the iconic Café du Monde. This historic café has been serving up piping hot beignets to locals and tourists alike since 1862, making it a must-visit destination for anyone craving this delectable dessert. The key to a perfect beignet lies in the dough - it should be light, airy, and perfectly fried to a golden brown. While Café du Monde is renowned for its beignets, there are also numerous other eateries in New Orleans that offer their own unique take on this classic dish. Whether you're enjoying them in the heart of the French Quarter or attempting to make them at home, beignets with powdered sugar are a true delight for the senses.
