Created by: Howcan Team

Ingredients

  • 2 sheets of puff pastry, thawed
  • 2 large apples, peeled, cored, and diced
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 tablespoon water

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a large bowl, combine 2 diced apples, 1/4 cup sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg, 1 tablespoon lemon juice, and 1 tablespoon cornstarch. Mix well to coat the apples evenly.
  • Roll out the thawed puff pastry sheets on a lightly floured surface. Cut each sheet into 4 equal squares.
  • Place a spoonful of the apple mixture onto one half of each pastry square, leaving a border around the edges. Fold the pastry over the filling to create a triangle and press the edges with a fork to seal.
  • Transfer the turnovers to the prepared baking sheet. In a small bowl, whisk together 1 beaten egg and 1 tablespoon of water. Brush the tops of the turnovers with the egg wash.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the turnovers are golden brown and puffed.
  • Allow the turnovers to cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy warm or at room temperature.

Apple turnovers have a rich history dating back to medieval times, where they were a popular dish in Europe. The recipe made its way to America with European immigrants, and it quickly became a beloved dessert across the country. The flaky pastry filled with sweet, cinnamon-spiced apples has been a staple in bakeries, cafes, and homes for generations. Renowned chefs like Julia Child and Martha Stewart have popularized the apple turnover, showcasing their own unique twists on the classic recipe. Today, the best apple turnovers can be found in artisanal bakeries and pastry shops, where skilled bakers use high-quality ingredients and traditional techniques to create the perfect balance of buttery crust and tender, flavorful apples. For those looking to make apple turnovers at home, the key lies in the quality of the apples and the flakiness of the pastry. Using crisp, tart apples like Granny Smith and mastering the art of creating a light, flaky dough are essential for achieving the perfect turnover. While the classic recipe calls for a simple filling of apples, sugar, and spices, some chefs have experimented with additions like caramel, nuts, or even a drizzle of glaze for a decadent twist. In addition to the traditional method of baking, some cooks have also explored alternative techniques such as air frying or grilling the turnovers for a unique flavor profile. Whether enjoyed warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or savored with a hot cup of coffee, the apple turnover continues to be a timeless dessert that delights taste buds around the world.
