Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup milk
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 3 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/4 cup hot water
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 10-inch bundt pan.
- In a large bowl, cream together 1 cup of butter and 1 1/2 cups of sugar until light and fluffy.
- Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract.
- Combine 2 1/2 cups of flour and 3 teaspoons of baking powder; stir into the batter alternately with 1 cup of milk.
- Divide the batter in half. In a small bowl, dissolve 1/4 cup of cocoa powder in 1/4 cup of hot water; stir into one half of the batter.
- Spoon the batters into the prepared pan in alternating spoonfuls. Drag a knife through the batters to create a marbled effect.
- Bake for 40 to 45 minutes in the preheated oven, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack and cool completely.
Tiger cake, also known as "torta tigre" or "torta zebrata," is a traditional Italian dessert with a striking marbled appearance resembling a tiger's stripes. This visually stunning cake is made by layering vanilla and chocolate batters to create a unique striped pattern. The origins of tiger cake can be traced back to the Lombardy region in Northern Italy, where it has been a beloved treat for generations. Renowned Italian chefs and bakeries, such as Pasticceria Marchesi in Milan, have perfected the art of crafting this delectable dessert. The key to a perfect tiger cake lies in achieving the ideal balance of moistness and rich flavors in each distinct layer. For those seeking a taste of this delightful confection, visiting a traditional Italian bakery or mastering the recipe at home is essential.
