Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 4 slices of American cheese
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 8 ounces of mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons of butter
  • 4 hamburger buns

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, mix together 1 pound of ground beef, 1 teaspoon of salt, 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper, and 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder.
  • Divide the seasoned ground beef into 8 equal portions and form them into thin patties.
  • Place 1 slice of American cheese on 4 of the patties, leaving a border around the edges. Top with the remaining 4 patties and press the edges to seal, forming 4 stuffed patties.

  • In the same skillet, cook the stuffed patties over medium-high heat for 4-5 minutes on each side, or until the desired level of doneness is reached.
  • Assemble the burgers by placing a spoonful of caramelized onions and mushrooms on the bottom half of each hamburger bun. Place a stuffed patty on top and cover with the top half of the bun.

American

The Juicy Lucy, a beloved American burger, has a rich history dating back to the 1950s. Originating in Minneapolis, Minnesota, two bars, Matt's Bar and the 5-8 Club, both claim to have invented this iconic dish. The Juicy Lucy is a cheese-stuffed burger, with the cheese sealed inside the patty. The addition of caramelized onions and mushrooms adds a delightful depth of flavor to this already indulgent creation. The sweet, savory, and earthy notes from the caramelized onions and mushrooms elevate the Juicy Lucy to new heights. Today, many restaurants across the United States offer their own spin on this classic, with variations that include different types of cheese and toppings. For the best version of this dish, head to Minneapolis and try it at its birthplace, Matt's Bar or the 5-8 Club. The key to getting this dish right lies in the quality of the ingredients and the technique used to caramelize the onions and mushrooms. For a twist on the classic, some chefs also incorporate a blend of different mushrooms for a more complex flavor profile. Whether you're a fan of the original Juicy Lucy or the version with caramelized onions and mushrooms, this dish is a must-try for any burger enthusiast.
