The roast beef sandwich has a rich history dating back to 18th century England, where it was a popular choice for Sunday lunches. The dish gained popularity in the United States during the 19th century, particularly in the Northeast region. Renowned chefs like James Beard and Julia Child have contributed to its evolution, emphasizing the importance of using high-quality, thinly sliced roast beef and fresh, crusty bread. Today, the best versions of this classic sandwich can be found in iconic delis and sandwich shops across New York City, where it's often served with horseradish or au jus for dipping. The key to a perfect roast beef sandwich lies in the tender, juicy meat and the perfect balance of flavors between the beef, bread, and condiments.
