American

The Reuben sandwich is a classic American creation, believed to have originated in the early 20th century. It typically consists of corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and Russian dressing, grilled between slices of rye bread. The exact origins of the Reuben are debated, but one popular theory attributes its creation to Reuben Kulakofsky, a Lithuanian-born grocer in Omaha, Nebraska. Another theory suggests that it was first crafted by Arnold Reuben, a New York restaurateur. Today, the Reuben can be found on menus across the United States, with notable versions served at Katz's Delicatessen in New York City and the Blackstone Hotel in Omaha. The key to a perfect Reuben lies in the quality of the ingredients, particularly the tender, flavorful corned beef and the tangy sauerkraut. Some variations of the Reuben include using turkey instead of corned beef, or substituting coleslaw for sauerkraut. Whether enjoyed at a bustling deli in New York or a cozy diner in the Midwest, the Reuben sandwich continues to be a beloved staple of American cuisine.
