Pulled BBQ Jackfruit
Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 2 cans of young green jackfruit in brine, drained and rinsed
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1/2 onion, diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 cup BBQ sauce
- 1/2 cup vegetable broth
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon cumin
- 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onion and minced garlic, and sauté until the onion is translucent.
- Add the drained and rinsed jackfruit to the skillet, and use a fork to break it apart into shreds.
- Stir in the BBQ sauce, vegetable broth, brown sugar, smoked paprika, cumin, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well to combine all the ingredients.
- Reduce the heat to low, cover the skillet, and let the jackfruit simmer for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it has absorbed the flavors and has a pulled pork-like texture.
- Once the jackfruit is tender and has absorbed the flavors, use a fork to further shred the jackfruit in the skillet, ensuring it resembles pulled pork.
- Remove the skillet from the heat and let the pulled BBQ jackfruit cool for a few minutes before serving.
- Serve the pulled BBQ jackfruit on buns, in tacos, or on top of a salad. Enjoy!
Pulled BBQ Jackfruit is a vegan alternative to pulled pork, made from the tropical jackfruit tree. Originating in Southeast Asia, this dish gained popularity in the West as a meat substitute due to its fibrous texture and ability to absorb flavors. Chefs like Chloe Coscarelli and restaurants such as The Chicago Diner have played a significant role in popularizing this dish. The best versions of this dish can be found in vegan and vegetarian restaurants, where chefs masterfully season and slow-cook the jackfruit to achieve a tender, smoky flavor. The key to a great Pulled BBQ Jackfruit lies in marinating the fruit in a rich BBQ sauce and slow-cooking it to perfection.
