Created by: Howcan Team

Ingredients

  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons of butter
  • 1 pound of ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper
  • 4 slices of rye bread
  • 4 slices of Swiss cheese
  • 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons of ketchup

Instructions

  • In a large skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 15-20 minutes or until the onions are golden brown and caramelized. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  • Divide the ground beef into 2 equal portions and shape them into patties. Season both sides of the patties with salt and black pepper.
  • In the same skillet used for the onions, melt the remaining 1 tablespoon of butter over medium-high heat. Add the beef patties and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness.
  • As the patties cook, spread mayonnaise on one side of each slice of rye bread. Place a slice of Swiss cheese on the non-mayonnaise side of each bread slice.
  • Once the patties are cooked, transfer them to a plate and wipe the skillet clean. Place 2 slices of rye bread, mayonnaise side down, in the skillet. Top each slice with a cooked beef patty, a generous portion of caramelized onions, and a drizzle of ketchup. Place the remaining bread slices on top, mayonnaise side up.
  • Cook the sandwiches for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
  • Remove the sandwiches from the skillet, slice in half, and serve hot. Enjoy your delicious caramelized onion patty melt!
