Created by: Howcan Team

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 4 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 4 lettuce leaves
  • 4 tomato slices

Instructions

  • In a bowl, mix the ground beef with 1 teaspoon of salt and 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape them into burger patties.
  • Preheat a grill or grill pan over medium-high heat. Place the burger patties on the grill and cook for 4-5 minutes on each side, or until desired doneness. Toast the hamburger buns on the grill for 1-2 minutes, until lightly browned.
  • In a separate pan, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for 10-15 minutes, or until the onions are caramelized and golden brown. Remove from the pan and set aside.
  • In the same pan, add the sliced mushrooms and cook for 5-7 minutes, or until they are tender and golden brown. Remove from the pan and set aside.
  • Place a slice of Swiss cheese on each burger patty during the last minute of grilling, allowing it to melt.
  • To assemble the burgers, spread 1 tablespoon of mayonnaise on the bottom half of each toasted bun. Top with a lettuce leaf, a tomato slice, a burger patty with melted Swiss cheese, a generous portion of caramelized onions, and sautéed mushrooms. Cover with the top half of the bun.
  • Serve the Mushroom Swiss Burgers with Caramelized Onions immediately and enjoy!

The Mushroom Swiss Burger with caramelized onions has a rich history dating back to the 1960s. This classic burger variation gained popularity in the United States, particularly in the Midwest and East Coast regions. Renowned chefs and diners alike have celebrated this dish for its savory combination of juicy beef patty, earthy mushrooms, and creamy Swiss cheese, complemented by the sweet and tangy flavor of caramelized onions. Today, the best versions of this burger can be found in traditional diners and gastropubs, where the caramelized onions are often slow-cooked to perfection, adding a depth of flavor to the burger. The key to a perfect Mushroom Swiss Burger with caramelized onions lies in the quality of the ingredients and the art of caramelizing the onions to achieve that irresistible sweetness. For a unique twist, some chefs also incorporate balsamic vinegar into the caramelized onions for an extra layer of complexity. Whether enjoyed at a local diner or crafted at home, this burger is a timeless favorite for burger enthusiasts.
