Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups of warm water
- 2 1/4 teaspoons of active dry yeast
- 3 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt
- 1 tablespoon of sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
- Vegetable oil for frying
- 1 cup of honey
- 1/2 cup of chopped walnuts (optional)
- 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon for sprinkling
Instructions
- In a large bowl, dissolve 2 1/4 teaspoons of active dry yeast in 1 1/2 cups of warm water. Let it sit for 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- In a separate bowl, sift together 3 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, 1 tablespoon of sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the yeast mixture, stirring well until the batter is smooth. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- In a deep pot, heat vegetable oil to 375°F (190°C).
- Using two spoons, carefully drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil. Fry until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side. Remove the loukoumades with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
- In a small saucepan, heat 1 cup of honey over low heat until it becomes thin and runny.
- Drizzle the warm honey over the loukoumades and sprinkle with chopped walnuts (if using) and a teaspoon of ground cinnamon.
- Serve the loukoumades warm and enjoy!
Loukoumades, also known as Greek honey puffs, are a beloved dessert with a history dating back to ancient Greece. These delectable golden puffs are made from deep-fried dough, drizzled with honey and sprinkled with cinnamon, making them a popular treat at festivals and celebrations. The dish has been passed down through generations, with each family adding their own unique touch. In Greece, they are often served with a sprinkle of chopped walnuts or a dollop of creamy yogurt. Today, the best Loukoumades can be found in traditional Greek tavernas and bakeries, where skilled chefs craft these sweet delights to perfection. For an authentic taste of Greece, it's essential to get the dough just right – light, airy, and crispy on the outside. Some modern variations include adding a touch of orange zest or a splash of flavored syrup for an extra burst of flavor. Whether enjoyed as a street food or a homemade treat, Loukoumades continue to delight food lovers around the world.
