Italian Ice

Created by: Howcan Team

Ingredients

  • 2 cups of water
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 2 cups of fruit juice (such as lemon, orange, or raspberry)
  • 1 tablespoon of lemon juice

Instructions

  • In a small saucepan, combine 2 cups of water and 1 cup of sugar. Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar is completely dissolved. This will create a simple syrup. Remove from heat and let it cool to room temperature.
  • Once the simple syrup has cooled, stir in 2 cups of fruit juice and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice. Mix well to combine.
  • Pour the mixture into a shallow, freezer-safe dish and place it in the freezer. After 1 hour, use a fork to scrape and stir the mixture, breaking up any ice crystals. Repeat this process every 30 minutes for 3-4 hours, or until the mixture is completely frozen and has a fluffy, icy texture.
  • Serve the Italian ice in small cups or bowls, and enjoy!

Italian ice, also known as water ice, is a refreshing frozen dessert that originated in Italy. Dating back to ancient Roman times, Italian ice was originally made by mixing fruit juices with snow or ice from the mountains. Over time, the recipe evolved to include a variety of flavors such as lemon, cherry, and mango. Italian immigrants brought the tradition to the United States, where it gained popularity in cities like New York and Philadelphia. Today, Italian ice is enjoyed across the world, with renowned establishments like Rita's Italian Ice and Luigi's Famous Italian Ice serving up delicious, authentic versions of this classic treat. The key to a perfect Italian ice lies in using fresh, high-quality ingredients and achieving the perfect balance of sweetness and tartness. Whether enjoyed on a hot summer day or as a light dessert, Italian ice continues to be a beloved frozen delicacy.
