Homemade Fruit Sherbet
Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 2 cups of fresh fruit chunks (such as strawberries, mango, or peaches)
- 1 cup of sugar
- 1 cup of water
- 1/4 cup of fresh lemon juice
- 1 cup of heavy cream
- 1/4 teaspoon of salt
Instructions
- In a small saucepan, combine 1 cup of sugar and 1 cup of water. Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar is completely dissolved. Remove from heat and let it cool to room temperature.
- In a blender, puree 2 cups of fresh fruit chunks until smooth. Strain the puree through a fine-mesh sieve to remove any seeds or pulp. You should have about 1 cup of fruit puree.
- In a large bowl, combine the fruit puree, cooled sugar syrup, 1/4 cup of fresh lemon juice, 1 cup of heavy cream, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt. Mix well until everything is fully combined.
- Pour the mixture into an ice cream maker and churn according to the manufacturer's instructions, usually about 15-20 minutes, or until the sherbet reaches a soft-serve consistency.
- Transfer the sherbet to a freezer-safe container, cover, and freeze for at least 4 hours or until firm.
- Scoop the homemade fruit sherbet into bowls or cones and enjoy!
Homemade sherbet with added chunks of fresh fruit has a rich history dating back to ancient Persia, where it was known as sharbat. This refreshing dessert made its way to the Mediterranean and eventually to the Western world, where it gained popularity for its delightful combination of creamy texture and fruity flavors. In the 17th century, Italian chefs began incorporating fresh chunks of fruit into their sherbet recipes, adding a burst of natural sweetness and texture. This tradition spread to other regions, including the Middle East and India, where local fruits like mangoes and lychees were used to enhance the sherbet's flavor. Today, the best versions of homemade sherbet with fresh fruit chunks can be found in artisanal ice cream shops and family-owned restaurants that take pride in using locally sourced, seasonal fruits. The key to a perfect homemade sherbet lies in the quality of the fruit and the balance of sweetness and tanginess in the base. Experimenting with different fruits and flavor combinations can lead to unique and delicious variations of this classic dessert.
