LunchSandwich
American

The history of the ham salad sandwich dates back to the early 20th century in the United States. It gained popularity as a convenient and delicious way to use leftover ham. The dish is a staple in Southern cuisine, particularly in regions like the Carolinas and Virginia. Chefs and home cooks alike have put their own spin on the recipe, often incorporating ingredients like mayonnaise, mustard, pickles, and onions. The key to a great ham salad sandwich lies in the quality of the ham and the balance of flavors in the salad mixture. Some variations include adding relish or using different types of mustard. Today, the best versions of this dish can be found in traditional Southern delis and diners.
