American

The grilled cheese sandwich has a rich history dating back to ancient times, with the modern version gaining popularity in the United States during the 1920s. This beloved comfort food consists of melted cheese between slices of buttered bread, grilled to golden perfection. Chefs and home cooks alike have put their own spin on this classic, adding ingredients like bacon, tomatoes, or jalapeños. In recent years, gourmet versions have emerged in trendy restaurants, featuring artisanal cheeses and specialty breads. The best grilled cheese sandwiches can be found in iconic diners and cozy cafes across the country, where the key is achieving the perfect balance of crispy exterior and gooey, melty interior. Whether it's made with cheddar, Swiss, or Gruyère, the key to a great grilled cheese is using high-quality cheese and achieving the ideal level of meltiness. For a twist on the traditional method, some chefs opt for grilling the sandwich in a panini press or even baking it in the oven. Whether enjoyed with a bowl of tomato soup or on its own, the grilled cheese sandwich continues to be a beloved staple in American cuisine.
