Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Carefully remove 12 large cabbage leaves from the head of cabbage and blanch them in the boiling water for 2-3 minutes, until softened. Remove and set aside to cool.
  • In a large bowl, combine 1 pound of ground beef, 1/2 cup of uncooked white rice, 1 small finely chopped onion, 1 beaten egg, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper.
  • Place a spoonful of the meat mixture onto each cabbage leaf, then roll up, tucking in the sides to create a neat package.
  • In a separate bowl, mix together 1 can of tomato sauce, 1 can of diced tomatoes, 1/4 cup of brown sugar, and 1/4 cup of lemon juice.
  • Spread a thin layer of the tomato mixture on the bottom of a large baking dish. Place the rolled cabbage leaves seam side down in the dish, then pour the remaining tomato mixture over the top.
  • Cover the dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour.
  • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes to brown the top.
  • Allow to cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy your delicious Golabki!
