The history of funeral sandwiches dates back to the American South, where they became a staple at post-funeral gatherings. These comforting sandwiches are typically made with Hawaiian rolls, layered with ham, Swiss cheese, and a savory buttery sauce, then baked to perfection. The dish gained popularity due to its convenience and ability to feed a crowd. Today, renowned chefs and restaurants across the South, such as The Pioneer Woman and Paula Deen, have put their own spin on this classic recipe. The key to perfect funeral sandwiches lies in the rich, flavorful buttery sauce and the quality of the ham and cheese. For a twist, some recipes call for adding poppy seeds or mustard for extra flavor. Whether served at a funeral or any gathering, these sandwiches are a beloved comfort food.
