Ingredients

  • 4 pork chops, 1 inch thick
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Season the pork chops with 1 teaspoon of salt, 1 teaspoon of black pepper, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, and 1 teaspoon of paprika.
  • In a dutch oven, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium-high heat. Sear the pork chops for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown. Remove the pork chops and set aside.
  • Add the sliced onion and minced garlic to the dutch oven. Cook for 2-3 minutes until softened.
  • Sprinkle 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour over the onions and garlic. Stir to combine and cook for 1-2 minutes to make a roux.
  • Slowly pour in 1 cup of chicken broth, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Bring to a simmer and cook for 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens.
  • Return the pork chops to the dutch oven, nestling them into the sauce. Cover with a lid and transfer to the preheated oven.
  • Bake for 30-40 minutes, or until the pork chops are tender and cooked through.
  • Remove the dutch oven from the oven and place the pork chops on a serving platter.
  • Stir 2 tablespoons of butter into the sauce until melted and well combined.
  • Pour the sauce over the pork chops and serve hot. Enjoy!

Dutch oven pork chops have a rich history dating back to the early settlers in the United States. This classic dish has been a staple in Dutch and American cuisine for centuries. The pork chops are seared to perfection in a cast-iron Dutch oven, then slow-cooked with a savory blend of herbs, spices, and vegetables. Chefs across the Midwest and Southern regions have put their own unique spin on this timeless recipe, making it a beloved comfort food. The key to achieving the best Dutch oven pork chops lies in the quality of the meat and the slow cooking process, allowing the flavors to meld and the meat to become tender. Today, the best versions of this dish can be found in traditional American diners and family-owned restaurants, where the recipe is passed down through generations. Whether it's the caramelized onions, the smoky paprika, or the perfectly seared pork, Dutch oven pork chops are a true delight for the senses.
