Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 1 package of active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup warm water
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/4 cup white sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup butter, softened
- 1 egg
- 2 cups of all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup butter, melted
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
Instructions
- In a small bowl, dissolve 1 package of active dry yeast in 1/4 cup of warm water. Let it stand for 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- In a separate bowl, heat 1/2 cup of milk until it is warm. Stir in 1/4 cup of white sugar, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and 1/4 cup of softened butter until the butter is melted.
- Add the yeast mixture and 1 beaten egg to the milk mixture and stir well.
- Gradually mix in 2 cups of all-purpose flour to form a soft dough. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
- Punch down the dough and roll it out into a 12x9 inch rectangle. Brush the dough with 1/4 cup of melted butter.
- In a small bowl, mix 1/2 cup of brown sugar and 1 tablespoon of ground cinnamon. Sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture evenly over the buttered dough.
- Roll up the dough jelly-roll style, starting from the long side. Cut the rolled dough into 12 equal pieces.
- Place the pieces cut side down in a greased 9x13 inch baking pan. Cover and let them rise in a warm place for 30 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
- Bake the pastries in the preheated oven for 20 minutes, or until they are golden brown.
- Allow the pastries to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy your delicious cinnamon sugar Danish pastry!
The history of Danish pastry with a cinnamon sugar topping dates back to the 19th century when Austrian bakers brought their techniques to Denmark. The flaky, buttery pastry became popular in Denmark and was often topped with a sweet cinnamon sugar mixture. Today, this delectable treat is enjoyed worldwide. In Denmark, renowned bakeries like Lagkagehuset and Juno the Bakery are known for their exceptional Danish pastries with a cinnamon sugar topping. The key to a perfect Danish pastry lies in the lamination of the dough and the generous sprinkling of cinnamon sugar, creating a delightful combination of flavors and textures.
