Created by: Howcan Team

Ingredients

  • 2 cups of whole milk
  • 1/2 cup of granulated sugar
  • 4 large egg yolks
  • 1/4 cup of cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • Ground nutmeg for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  • In a medium saucepan, heat 2 cups of whole milk over medium heat until it just begins to simmer. Remove from heat and set aside.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together 1/2 cup of granulated sugar, 4 large egg yolks, 1/4 cup of cornstarch, and a pinch of salt until well combined.
  • Slowly pour the warm milk into the egg mixture, whisking constantly to prevent the eggs from scrambling.
  • Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it thickens and coats the back of a spoon, about 5-7 minutes. Do not let it boil.
  • Remove from heat and stir in 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.
  • Strain the custard through a fine-mesh sieve into a clean bowl to remove any lumps.
  • Cover the surface of the custard with plastic wrap to prevent a skin from forming and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or until completely chilled.
  • Once chilled, spoon the custard into serving dishes and sprinkle with ground nutmeg if desired. Serve and enjoy!

Custard has a rich history dating back to ancient Rome, where it was a popular dessert made with milk, eggs, and honey. Over the centuries, custard has evolved into various forms, from the classic crème brûlée in France to the creamy flan in Spain. In the 17th century, English chefs perfected the art of custard, creating the beloved English custard tart. Today, custard is enjoyed worldwide, with each region adding its own unique twist. The best custard can be found in traditional French patisseries, where skilled pastry chefs use the finest vanilla and eggs to create a velvety, indulgent treat. Whether baked, steamed, or chilled, custard remains a timeless dessert that continues to delight food lovers everywhere.
