Ingredients
- 4 bratwurst sausages
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon curry powder
- 1 cup ketchup
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 4 large potatoes, cut into fries
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
- In a large bowl, toss the cut potatoes with 2 tablespoons of olive oil, 1 teaspoon of paprika, 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon of onion powder, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper until evenly coated. Spread the fries in a single layer on a baking sheet and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until golden and crispy.
- While the fries are baking, heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, and cook until softened, about 3-4 minutes.
- Add the curry powder to the skillet and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
- Stir in the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, apple cider vinegar, and sugar. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Simmer the sauce for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened.
- In a separate skillet, cook the bratwurst sausages over medium heat for 10-12 minutes, or until browned and cooked through.
- To serve, place a cooked bratwurst on a plate, smother it with the curry ketchup sauce, and serve with a generous portion of crispy fries.
- Enjoy your homemade currywurst with fries!
Currywurst with fries is a beloved German fast food dish that originated in Berlin in the 1940s. It consists of sliced pork sausage smothered in a tangy, spiced ketchup sauce and served with a side of crispy fries. The dish was reportedly invented by Herta Heuwer, who concocted the curry ketchup sauce using ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and curry powder. Today, currywurst stands as an iconic street food in Germany, with numerous food stalls and restaurants across the country specializing in this flavorful dish. The best versions of currywurst can be found in Berlin, where it's a staple of the local culinary scene. The key to a perfect currywurst lies in the balance of flavors in the curry ketchup sauce, as well as the quality of the sausage and the crispiness of the fries. While the traditional recipe calls for pork sausage, there are also delicious variations using bratwurst or other types of sausage. Whether enjoyed as a quick bite on the go or as a sit-down meal, currywurst with fries is a must-try for anyone visiting Germany.
