Currywurst is a beloved German fast food dish consisting of steamed, then fried pork sausage, sliced, and generously smothered in a tangy, spiced ketchup sauce, and dusted with curry powder. Created in 1949 by Berliner Herta Heuwer, it quickly became a staple of German cuisine. Today, it's a popular street food found in every corner of Germany, with Berlin being the epicenter of its culinary fame. The best versions of this dish can be found in Berlin's street food stalls, where each vendor has their own secret recipe for the curry ketchup. The key to a perfect currywurst lies in the balance of flavors in the sauce and the quality of the sausage. For a unique twist, some chefs add a splash of cola to the ketchup for a hint of sweetness. Whether enjoyed with fries or a crusty bread roll, currywurst is a must-try for any food enthusiast visiting Germany.
