Ingredients
- 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 carrots, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup beef broth
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 cup frozen peas
- 4 cups mashed potatoes
- 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned. Drain any excess fat.

- Sprinkle the flour over the beef and vegetable mixture, and stir to combine. Cook for 1-2 minutes.
- Pour in the beef broth and tomato paste, stirring to combine. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for 5-7 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened.
- Stir in the frozen peas, and season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Transfer the beef and vegetable mixture to a 9x13 inch baking dish, and spread the mashed potatoes over the top, smoothing it out with a spatula.
- Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the mashed potatoes.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the cottage pie is bubbling and the top is golden brown.
- Allow to cool for 5-10 minutes before serving. Enjoy!
Cottage Pie, a classic British comfort food, has a rich history dating back to the 18th century. Traditionally made with minced beef or lamb, topped with mashed potatoes, and baked to golden perfection, this hearty dish has been a staple in British households for generations. Chefs like Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay have put their own modern twists on this timeless recipe, adding unique flavors and techniques. While the best version of Cottage Pie can be found in cozy pubs and traditional British restaurants, home cooks can also create a delicious rendition by focusing on perfectly seasoned meat and creamy mashed potatoes. For a vegetarian alternative, lentils or mushrooms can be used as a filling.
