Homemade Cinnamon Rolls

Created by: Howcan Team

Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/3 cup cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, dissolve 1 tablespoon of sugar in the warm milk. Sprinkle the yeast over the top and let it sit for 5-10 minutes, until it becomes frothy.
  • In a large bowl, mix together the remaining sugar, melted butter, salt, and eggs. Add the yeast mixture and flour, and mix until a soft dough forms.
  • Knead the dough on a floured surface for 6-8 minutes, until it is smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, until it doubles in size.
  • Punch down the dough and roll it out on a floured surface into a 16x21 inch rectangle. Spread the softened butter over the dough, then sprinkle the brown sugar and cinnamon evenly over the surface.
  • Roll up the dough tightly, starting from the long edge, and pinch the seam to seal. Cut into 12 equal pieces and place them in a greased 9x13 inch baking pan. Cover and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Bake the rolls for 15-20 minutes, until they are golden brown.
  • While the rolls are baking, make the cream cheese frosting by beating together the cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  • Spread the frosting over the warm cinnamon rolls and serve. Enjoy!

The history of the cinnamon roll dates back to Sweden, where it is known as "kanelbulle." This delectable pastry has a rich and aromatic flavor, with layers of buttery dough, sugar, and cinnamon, all topped with a sweet glaze. In the 1920s, Swedish chef and cookbook author Melitta Nordstedt popularized the kanelbulle, and it soon became a beloved treat in Scandinavian countries. Today, the best cinnamon rolls can be found in cozy bakeries in Sweden, Denmark, and Norway. To make the perfect cinnamon roll, it's crucial to get the dough just right, ensuring a soft and fluffy texture that melts in your mouth. Alternatively, some bakers add a hint of cardamom for a unique twist on this classic pastry.
