Created by: Howcan Team

Ingredients

  • 1 package of kunafa dough
  • 1 cup of unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 cups of ricotta cheese
  • 1 cup of mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 1/2 cup of sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of orange zest
  • 1/2 cup of semolina
  • 1/2 cup of chopped pistachios
  • 1/2 cup of dark chocolate chips

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a large bowl, separate the kunafa dough strands and mix with melted butter until well coated.
  • In another bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, mozzarella cheese, sugar, and orange zest.
  • Spread half of the kunafa dough in the bottom of a greased 9x13 inch baking dish, pressing down gently to form an even layer.
  • Spread the cheese mixture over the kunafa layer, then top with the remaining kunafa dough, pressing down gently again.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes, or until the kunafa is golden brown and crispy.
  • While the kunafa is baking, prepare the syrup by combining 1 cup of sugar and 1 cup of water in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in the orange blossom water.
  • Once the kunafa is done baking, pour the syrup evenly over the hot kunafa, allowing it to soak in and cool for 10 minutes.
  • In a small saucepan, melt the dark chocolate chips over low heat, stirring constantly until smooth.
  • Drizzle the melted chocolate over the kunafa, then sprinkle with chopped pistachios.
  • Allow the kunafa to cool slightly before slicing and serving. Enjoy!
Dessert
Middle Eastern

The Chocolate Drizzled Kunafa with a hint of orange zest is a delightful twist on the traditional Middle Eastern dessert. Originating in the Levant region, kunafa is a pastry made with thin noodle-like pastry soaked in sweet, sugar-based syrup. The addition of chocolate and orange zest adds a rich and citrusy flavor to this beloved dessert. Renowned chefs like Yotam Ottolenghi have popularized this modern variation, infusing it with their own unique flair. For the best version of this dish, head to upscale Middle Eastern restaurants or patisseries known for their innovative desserts. The key to nailing this dish lies in achieving the perfect balance of sweetness from the chocolate and the refreshing citrus notes from the orange zest. Whether you're enjoying it in a fine dining setting or making it at home, this decadent treat is sure to impress.
