Spicy Chicken and Dumplings
Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 1 whole chicken, cut into pieces
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 onion, diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 jalapeno, seeded and diced
- 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon cumin
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 6 cups chicken broth
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup butter
- 3/4 cup milk
Instructions
- In a large pot, heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Add the diced onion, minced garlic, and diced jalapeno. Cook until the onion is translucent, about 5 minutes.
- Add the chicken pieces to the pot and brown on all sides, about 8-10 minutes.
- Stir in the cayenne pepper, paprika, cumin, black pepper, and salt. Pour in the chicken broth and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 30 minutes.
- While the chicken is simmering, prepare the dumplings. In a mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of flour, 1 tablespoon of baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the milk until just combined.
- Drop spoonfuls of the dumpling mixture into the simmering chicken broth. Cover and cook for 15 minutes, or until the dumplings are cooked through.
- Remove the chicken and dumplings from heat and let it cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy the spicy kick in this comforting dish!

This comforting dish consists of tender chicken, savory broth, and fluffy dumplings. However, for those who crave a spicy twist, adding cayenne pepper, hot sauce, or diced jalapeños can elevate the flavor profile. Chefs in the Southern United States, particularly in regions like Louisiana and Texas, have perfected the art of infusing heat into this classic dish.
