Ingredients

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 1 cup of Carolina BBQ sauce
  • 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup of brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon of onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 1 cup of coleslaw

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, mix together 1 cup of Carolina BBQ sauce, 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar, 1/4 cup of brown sugar, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, 1 teaspoon of onion powder, 1/2 teaspoon of paprika, 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper, and 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper to make the BBQ sauce.
  • Place the chicken breasts in a resealable plastic bag and pour half of the BBQ sauce over the chicken. Seal the bag and marinate in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour.
  • Preheat the grill to medium-high heat. Remove the chicken from the marinade and discard the used marinade.
  • Grill the chicken for 6-7 minutes on each side, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (75°C). Baste the chicken with the remaining BBQ sauce during the last few minutes of grilling.
  • Remove the chicken from the grill and let it rest for 5 minutes. Then, slice the chicken into thin strips.
  • Toast the hamburger buns on the grill for 1-2 minutes, until lightly golden.
  • Assemble the sandwiches by placing the sliced BBQ chicken on the bottom half of each bun, topping with coleslaw, and covering with the top half of the bun.
  • Serve the Carolina BBQ chicken sandwiches with extra coleslaw and BBQ sauce on the side. Enjoy!

The Carolina BBQ Chicken Sandwich has a rich history rooted in the southern culinary tradition. Originating in the Carolinas, this dish features tender, smoky grilled chicken slathered in a tangy, vinegar-based barbecue sauce. Renowned chefs like Rodney Scott and Sam Jones have elevated this classic sandwich, drawing inspiration from their family recipes and regional techniques. The best versions of this dish can be found in local barbecue joints and eateries across North and South Carolina, where the emphasis is on slow-cooked, pit-smoked chicken and a well-balanced, zesty sauce. The key to a perfect Carolina BBQ Chicken Sandwich lies in the marriage of succulent chicken, a flavorful sauce, and a soft, toasted bun. Whether it's served with coleslaw or pickles, this sandwich is a beloved staple in the South.
