Created by: Howcan Team

Ingredients

  • 1 pound of fresh strawberries
  • 1 cup of granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup of water
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup of powdered sugar (for dusting)

Instructions

  • Rinse the strawberries under cold water and pat them dry with a paper towel. Remove the stems and leaves, then set aside.
  • In a small saucepan, combine 1 cup of granulated sugar and 1/4 cup of water. Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the sugar has dissolved and the mixture comes to a simmer.
  • Add 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract to the sugar syrup and stir to combine.
  • Carefully place the strawberries into the simmering sugar syrup, making sure they are fully submerged. Let them cook for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the strawberries are glossy and the syrup has thickened slightly.
  • Using a slotted spoon, remove the candied strawberries from the syrup and place them on a wire rack to cool and dry for 5-10 minutes.
  • Once the strawberries have cooled, dust them with 1/4 cup of powdered sugar to add a sweet finish.
  • Serve the candied strawberries as a delightful sweet treat or use them as a topping for desserts like ice cream, cakes, or parfaits. Enjoy!

Candied strawberries have a rich history dating back to the 16th century, when they were enjoyed as a delicacy in Europe. This sweet treat gained popularity in France, where skilled confectioners perfected the art of candying fruits. The process involves immersing fresh strawberries in a sugar syrup, which crystallizes to create a glossy, sweet coating. Today, renowned chefs like Pierre Hermé and Dominique Ansel have elevated candied strawberries to gourmet status, serving them in upscale patisseries and restaurants. For the best candied strawberries, look for ripe, juicy berries and use a high-quality sugar syrup to achieve a perfect balance of sweetness and fruitiness.
