Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 1 head of broccoli, cut into florets
- 1 head of cauliflower, cut into florets
- 1/4 cup of butter
- 1/4 cup of all-purpose flour
- 2 cups of milk
- 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt
- 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper
- 1/2 cup of breadcrumbs
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
- Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add the broccoli and cauliflower florets and cook for 5 minutes. Drain and set aside.
- In a saucepan, melt 1/4 cup of butter over medium heat. Stir in 1/4 cup of flour to make a roux. Cook for 2 minutes, stirring constantly.
- Gradually whisk in 2 cups of milk, and continue cooking and stirring until the mixture thickens, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar cheese, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper until the cheese is melted and the sauce is smooth.
- Place the cooked broccoli and cauliflower in the prepared baking dish. Pour the cheese sauce over the vegetables and gently stir to coat.
- In a small bowl, mix together 1/2 cup of breadcrumbs and 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar cheese. Sprinkle this mixture over the top of the casserole.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden and the casserole is bubbly.
- Allow to cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy!
The history of Broccoli and Cauliflower Casserole dates back to the 20th century when casseroles became a popular dish in American households. This comforting and versatile dish gained popularity due to its ease of preparation and delicious flavors. Chefs and home cooks across the United States have put their own spin on this classic casserole, incorporating different cheeses, seasonings, and toppings to create unique variations. Today, the best versions of this dish can be found in Southern and Midwestern regions of the United States, where it is often served as a side dish at family gatherings and holiday feasts. The key to a perfect Broccoli and Cauliflower Casserole lies in the creamy cheese sauce and the crispy breadcrumb topping, which add layers of flavor and texture to the dish.
