Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 4 cups mixed berries (such as strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries)
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup rolled oats
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into small pieces
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9x9 inch baking dish.
- In a large bowl, toss 4 cups of mixed berries with 1/4 cup of granulated sugar and lemon juice. Transfer the berry mixture to the prepared baking dish.
- In another bowl, combine 1 cup of flour, 1/2 cup of rolled oats, 1/2 cup of brown sugar, 1/4 cup of granulated sugar, 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt. Mix well.
- Add 1/2 cup of cold, diced unsalted butter to the flour mixture. Use your fingers to work the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Sprinkle the topping evenly over the berries in the baking dish.
- Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the berry filling is bubbling around the edges.
- Allow the berry crisp to cool for 10 minutes before serving. Enjoy it warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
Berry crisp is a classic dessert that originated in the United States. It is believed to have been created in the early 20th century, gaining popularity during the Great Depression due to its simple and economical ingredients. The dish typically consists of a layer of fresh or frozen berries, topped with a crumbly mixture of flour, oats, butter, and sugar, then baked until the fruit is bubbling and the topping is golden brown. Chefs and home cooks across the country have put their own spin on this comforting dessert, with variations featuring different types of berries and added spices like cinnamon or nutmeg. Today, the best versions of berry crisp can be found in farm-to-table restaurants and bakeries that prioritize using fresh, seasonal fruits. The key to a perfect berry crisp lies in achieving a balance of sweet and tart flavors in the fruit filling, and a crunchy, buttery topping that complements the juicy berries. For a unique twist, some chefs incorporate unexpected ingredients like balsamic vinegar or basil to elevate the flavor profile of the dish. Whether served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream, berry crisp continues to be a beloved dessert that captures the essence of American home cooking.
